Turner & Townsend have been appointed, under a new industrial decarbonisation contract, to install Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) technology at Viridor‘s Energy from Waste facility at Runcorn
The CCUS technology will remove nearly 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere every year.
It is essential to the UK Government’s 10-point plan for a green industrial revolution. The plan aims to support ‘green jobs’ and achieve net zero ambitions.
Turner and Townsend will provide Project Management Consultant (PMC) services for the project.
HyNet North West
The industrial decarbonisation contract will lay the groundwork for the integration of HyNet North West low carbon and hydrogen energy cluster.
HyNet will enable the carbon dioxide captured at Runcorn to be transported and permanently stored offshore in depleted Liverpool Bay gas fields.
Hynet, is one of only two industrial cluster schemes to receive Track 1 status for CCUS as part of the UK Government’s industrial decarbonisation challenge.

The industrial decarbonisation contract will use a collaborative approach of industry-leading consultants for engineering, CCUS technology, legal, planning, permitting and economic modelling.
The initial phase aims to develop the Phase 2 submission as part of the Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) industrial decarbonisation challenge fund’
‘First of a kind project in the UK’
Andrew Etherington, director at Natural Resources at Turner & Townsend, made the following comments:

“Given the number of EfW plants in the UK and globally, the project also represents a major opportunity for the UK to encourage inward investment, skills, and jobs, as well as taking a global lead on this rapidly evolving technology.”
Viridor net zero ambitions
Runcorn is at the foundation of Viridor’s strategy to achieve net zero emissions by 2040. It is also part of Viridor’s ambition to be the first net negative emissions waste and recycling company in the UK by 2045.
Looking to the future, the development of modular CCUS plants on another five EfW sites combined with two planned bespoke CCUS plants would deliver saving of c.1.5 MT CO2 per year.
CCUS plants would also contribute to the local economy by creating around 1,000 construction jobs and up to 180 skilled green jobs in Scotland, Wales and the English regions.
