Tilbury Douglas has been appointed by Stockport NHS Foundation Trust to deliver a new £25m Emergency and Urgent Care Campus at Stepping Hill Hospital, remodelling the existing Emergency Department

The new Emergency and Urgent Care Campus will expand the existing Emergency Department at Stepping Hill Hospital in south-eastern Stockport.

The hospital- which first opened in 1905- is currently designed to accommodate 50,000 outpatients (injured persons coming into A&E) a year, but now sees roughly twice that number.

The redesign and expansion of the Emergency and Urgent Care Campus should help the century-old hospital to meet patient demand.

Refurbishment of existing facilities along with new accommodation for non-clinical staff

The scheme includes a full-scale remodelling of the current Emergency Department at Stepping Hill, with approximately 2,600sqm of internal refurbishment. There will also be a radical transformation of the existing ambulance drop-off area to the Poplar Grove Road elevation.

The project will include 1,300 square metres of new build development, offering 375 square metres of new non-clinical staff accommodation at first-floor level.

The appointment forms part of wider plans to revitalize Stockport’s healthcare and hospital provisions

The new Emergency and Urgent Care Campus at Stepping Hill is the latest in Stockport NHS Foundation Trust’s efforts to renew and increase the number of hospitals in the area. In September 2021,  a bid was announced to be selected as one of the eight new hospital in the wave of projects due to be completed by 2030, part of the Government’s Health Infrastructure Plan.

Phil Shaw, divisional director for the North West at Tilbury Douglas, commented on the Stepping Hill Hospital announcement: “Working collaboratively, we will ensure to sustainably deliver this much-needed project to a high quality and according to national operational standards. Once completed, the local community will really benefit from the new facilities.”
