Willmott Dixon has begun construction on two specialised healthcare facilities as part of a collaborative project with Prime plc and the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS)

The new healthcare facilities will be built on plot 2 of the Adanac Health and Innovation Campus in Southampton. The project is funded by Macquarie Asset Management on behalf of the retirement specialist, Just Group plc.

The development will include an Aseptic Pharmacy and Sterile Services Department (SSD), along with additional flexible space for expansion.

The Aseptic Pharmacy will operate as a licensed pharmacy under MHRA regulations, producing sterile medications for UHS and other NHS providers in the area. The SSD will be responsible for sterilising surgical tools and equipment for UHS.

The new healthcare facilities can ease pressure on the UHS

The UHS trust is one of England’s largest acute teaching trusts. The UHS has struggled with high demand on its limited site. Teaming up with Prime through the Southampton Commercial Estates Development Partnership (CEDP) has allowed them to tackle this challenge.

Previous projects added a new entrance, retail spaces, and a staff car park. The creation of the Adanac Health and Innovation Campus, near the hospital and the motorway network, further helped expansion.

A multi-storey park and ride car park and a Costa Coffee outlet have also been added, with three more plots yet to be developed.

Willmott Dixon adds to their extensive portfolio in the healthcare space

In 2022, Willmott Dixon and Prime completed a 600+ space multi-storey car park at Dorset County Hospital, providing much-needed parking and space for the Trust’s expansion. This highlights Willmott Dixon’s position as a major healthcare space constructor.

Other notable projects include the innovative Bolton College of Medical Sciences, a national NHS staff training model, and the world-leading Pears Building – Institute of Immunity and Transplantation at the Royal Free Hospital.

“The construction of these healthcare facilities will be a major milestone in our partnership with UHS and a big step towards our shared goal of deepening the reputation of Southampton as a centre for medical excellence, preserving clinical space and enriching the local economy,” said Ewan Forsyth, development director for Prime.

“We are delighted to be working with Prime again following our successful collaboration at Dorset Country Hospital. We’ll now be taking the learning from there to this project for UHS with a team that provides continuity in what we can deliver with Prime for the healthcare community,” concluded Richard Poulter, managing director of Willmott Dixon in the South.
