Structural Engineers Registration Ltd (SER) is in search of a new board director from the built environment sector
Established in 2004, SER is a wholly owned trading subsidiary of The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE). The Institution of Structural Engineers is the world’s largest organisation dedicated to structural engineering, with over 29,000 members in 138 countries.
What is SER working on?
The company oversee registration schemes for certifying the design of building structures. They are currently employed by the Scottish government to manage their registration schemes by The State of Jersey Planning and Environmental Department to do the same.
These schemes are subject to approval by the Scottish or Jersey Registration Board (SRB and JRB), ensuring compliance with safety standards set by the relevant legislative bodies.
“This necessary legislative process places the safety of building structures at its core. We are now seeking a professional from the built environment sector to join the SER Board and contribute to shaping SER’s strategic direction,” commented Kristy MacDonald, board secretary of IStructE and company secretary of SER.
“We are looking for applicants with the requisite experience in building regulations, exceptional technical knowledge, and strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with our fellow directors and stakeholders,” added Norman Train, chair of the board of SER.

Applicants must be professional members of a built environment membership organisation such as IStructE, the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS), The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), or the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).
The role is a flexible, compensated position, requiring a commitment of eight to ten days per year, including participation in four SER Board meetings conducted both remotely and in London. There may also be occasional responsibilities between meetings. The term is three years, with the possibility of renewal for an additional three years.
