GRAHAM has been awarded a contract to deliver a £22.68m upgrade to Aurs Road, between Barrhead and Newton Mearns by East Renfrewshire Council
To facilitate the Aurs Roads upgrade, the road will be closed from the junction of Springfield Road in Barrhead to the junction of Stewarton Road in Newton Mearns from 8th January 2024.
Works will continue for an estimated 12 months until December 2024. Diversion routes will be in place via Stewarton Road, Nitshill Road and Darnley Road.
The Aurs Road upgrade will transform the single carriage road into a safer, straighter road with a new active travel route and waterside promenade alongside Balgray Reservoir.
Essential reservoir maintenance works will also be carried out on behalf of Scottish Water while the road closure is in place.
General improvements and greater walking spaces will be provided
The Aurs Road upgrade will form a safer, more direct local route between Barrhead and Newton Mearns, with a straighter road and replacing a weak road bridge.
Balgray Reservoir will gain a new 4km circular walking and cycling route for park visitors, as well as linking with a 2km active travel path connecting Barrhead and Newton Mearns to and through Dams to Darnley Country Park.
The project will be partially funded via developer contributions from local housing projects

The £22.68m Aurs Road upgrade project will be funded through £12.72m from the Glasgow City Region City Deal, which is made up of £5.5m in funding by both the UK and Scottish governments and £1.72m from East Renfrewshire Council.
The remaining funding is provided by Transport Scotland through Sustrans’ Places for Everyone programme, the Scottish Government’s Bridge Fund and developer contributions from new house-building projects in the area.
