The team leading the Grenfell Tower Inquiry have confirmed that the report will not be published before the seventh anniversary of the fire
The Grenfell Tower Inquiry team confirmed in an update published on 11th April that the final report would not be ready before the anniversary of the fire.
On 14 June 2017, a fire broke out in the 24-storey Grenfell Tower block of flats in North Kensington, West London, claiming 72 lives and more than 70 injured.
The phase two report will look into the causes of the fire
The Grenfell Tower Inquiry was launched to investigate the industry and building safety failings which caused the fire to spread.
The first Grenfell Tower Inquiry report was published in October 2019. This phase one report offered a comprehensive overview of the events that transpired in the early hours of 14 June 2017, along with the London Fire Brigade’s response to the fire.
The phase two report will investigate the fire’s causes, with the inquiry having received 299,658 documents pertinent to the investigation.
The report is now reaching its final stages
The inquiry stated that although the report is now reaching its final stages, the team is not in’ a position to publish the report before the next anniversary of the fire, as we had originally hoped’.
The cause for the delay was cited due to having to ‘write to about 250 people’; therefore, the process was ‘significantly larger and more complex’ than originally expected.
The Grenfell Tower Inquiry team said: “We remain determined to publish the report as soon as possible, and the whole Inquiry team is working as hard as it can to ensure that no time is lost.
“When we have a better understanding of how much longer the rule 13 process is likely to take, we shall write again and, if possible, provide a date for publication.”
