The Modular Building Institute’s Modular Advantage June 2024 edition features case studies of the winning building projects from its Awards of Distinction contest and examines the successful 2024 World of Modular.

Modular advantage: The potential of modular construction

In the Modular Building Institute’s Modular Advantage June 2024 edition, Kevin Grosskopf, professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, highlights the advantages and disadvantages of modular, stating: “It’s not necessarily going to replace site-built in every situation. But there are certain markets where modular is clearly the better choice.”

By having greater control over project design and considering the number and timing of projects, modular manufacturers can better sustain production between project cycles. This allows factories to operate more efficiently with less worker turnover.

Inflation is returning in 2024

Anirban Basu, chairman & CEO of Sage Policy Group and chief economist of the Modular Building Institute, reflects on returning inflation caused by wage pressures.

In March, it was reported that the US’s unemployment rate fell to 3.8%, causing wage pressures to persist.

An insight into Japan’s modular industry

Elsewhere in the June 2024 edition of Modular Advantage, James Haas, offsite construction sales manager for Nichiha, is interviewed by James McMullen, PCM marketing director at the Modular Building Institute.

Haas explains that Japan’s modular industry is a compelling model for the US. Businesses in the US, like Nichiha, can implement installation techniques from their Japanese counterparts to elevate modular construction.
