The £750m upgrade to the M4 corridor around Newport has been awarded to contractors Costain and Vinci…

The contract will see construction companies Costain, Vinci Construction Grands Projets, and Taylor Woodrow, the civil engineering branch of Vinci Construction UK, deliver the £750m upgrade to the motorway around Newport, Wales. Costain has a 50 per cent stake in the three-way joint venture.

The contract, which was awarded by the Welsh government, will include building 24km of new motorway and a 2.5km long cable-stayed viaduct to cross the River Usk. Further work will be undertaken on the M4 junctions 23 and 29.

The project is part of the strategic road network and will deliver aims set by the government to create a more efficient, safer and sustainable transport system. The scheme was originally put forward in 1991, but was dropped by the Welsh Assembly in 2009 due to the costs.

The partnership beat competition from Bouygues/Alun Griffiths/Roadbridge; Ferrovial/Dawnus; FCC/Sir Robert McAlpine/Morgan Sindall; and a Balfour/Carillion joint venture.

Work is expected to start immediately, with the second stage estimated to start in spring 2018.

Chief Executive of Costain Andrew Wyllie said: ”We are delighted to be developing this critical infrastructure scheme for the Welsh Government.

“This award is further demonstration of the importance to Costain of long-term strategic partnerships with our Customers, and our ability to deliver integrated consulting and project delivery services.”

It is expected the project will complete in 2022.
