Construction firm Galliford Try has won a £46m contract to carry out work on behalf of Birmingham City University…

A £46m Conservatoire in central Birmingham will be constructed by Galliford Try. The firm signed contracts with Birmingham City University to undertake the project.

It was estimated the original price of the contract would be between £27m and £35m last August. However, contractors bidding for the project found it difficult to bring the scheme within the original forecast budget.

The plans for the music facility will comprise of a seven storey building with a 500-seat concert hall, complete with room for a full orchestra. There will also be a recital hall with 150 seats, as well as smaller experimental music spaces.

The mechanical and electrical design on the project will be carried out by Hoare Lea & Partners.

The building, designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studio, has proven controversial because of the blocky nature of the planned architecture and the amount of bricks needed to give the venue acoustic insulation.

Galliford Try’s Executive Chairman Greg Fitzgerald said: “We are delighted to be involved in such a high-profile and significant project for both Birmingham and the surrounding area.

“We look forward to working with Birmingham City University and the design team to produce a world-class musical facility for both the students and the wider community.”
