The Considerate Constructors Scheme has published a new initiative focusing on occupational cancers caused by working in the construction sector…
A new ‘Spotlight on…’ series will raise awareness of cancers caused by working within the industry. The Considerate Constructors Scheme, which launched the initiative, is a non-profit organisation set up to improve the image of the construction sector.
This initiative will concentrate on how the industry can work to safeguard its workforce against the dangers of contracting terminal diseases.
Cancers are a serious risk in the construction sector. Skin and lung cancers are in particular prolific when compared to other industry groups. Construction workers face greater risk due to working with dangerous substances such as asbestos, silica, diesel engine exhaust emissions, paint, and prolonged exposure to UV radiation. Without correct measures in place employees can be in danger of breathing in or absorbing harmful substances.
Additionally, due to the long incubation period of many occupational cancers symptoms can take a number of years to appear, meaning it is often not viewed as a high risk health and safety issue.
Chief Executive Edward Hardy said: “A staggering 40 per cent of total occupational cancer deaths arise within the construction industry.
“There’s no doubt that more awareness raising and preventative measures need to be adopted across the industry.
“The Scheme monitors around 8000 sites, companies and suppliers every year, and therefore plays a critical role in helping to raise awareness on the ground.
“The good news is that many of those registered with the Scheme are taking action. Examples include proactively removing carcinogen and hazardous substances, isolating high risk areas, introducing controls to reduce exposure, providing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to match the working conditions, raising general awareness and offering appropriate support and advice.”
