The Education Funding Agency has announced plans to publish a new school building framework. It will be used to deliver free schools, university technical colleges, studio schools, and academies.

Parties interested in the framework, which will be worth around £6bn and will include some 30 places, should register online by 6 June.

The framework was set up with small to medium enterprises (SMEs) in mind. It was hoped it could generate work for local contractors. However, in March 2015 the National Federation of Builders (NFB) published a report that revealed no SMEs had been awarded contracts in the EFA regional framework.

NFB chief executive Richard Beresford said: “We are strongly encouraging members with experience in school building to sign up for the EFA construction framework.

“Regional SMEs have local communities at heart because they employ, train, and invest money locally and represent value for money. For every £1 spent with an SME, 90p remains in the local economy.”
