Site: Cairngorm National Park, Grantown-on-Spey
Contractor: McGowan Ltd
Client: RS McLeod
FP McCann’s precast concrete box culverts, together with a bespoke design back wall and wing wall system, have been installed as part of a programme of enabling earthworks, drainage and roads infrastructure on a new housing development in Grantown-on-Spey in the Cairngorm National Park
The new 53 plot housing development is being undertaken by Scottish building company RS McLeod under the auspices of the Cairngorm National Park Authority. The site presents a number of challenges and suitable mitigation methods have been put in place to protect otter habitats, trees and prevent pollution to the natural watercourse running through the site during construction.
Ground worker and civil engineering group McGowan Ltd has secured the enabling earthworks, roads and drainage infrastructure work; part of which requires the installation of a 20 metres run of a box culvert section system designed to carry the burn running through the site under a new 400 metres road providing access to the development.
FP McCann’s precast concrete facility in Byley, Cheshire supplied 11 culvert sections, including 9 standard units and 2 special end sections to form the main culvert run. Each culvert measures 3600mm wide x 1100mm high x 1820mm long internally and includes a 200mm dry weather flow channel. The two culvert inlet and outlet end units have been fitted with a special precast back wall slab, complete with cast-in threaded sockets for the fixing of precast concrete wing walls seated on concrete toe plinths. The base units of the inlet and outlet sections to the burn have been dressed with natural stone from the area to mimic the river bed, a requirement set down by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency
Commenting on the order, Steve Walker, FP McCann’s Box Culvert Manager says, “The supply contract with McGowan further demonstrates the flexibility of box culvert sections in environmentally sensitive civil engineering works. Precast concrete is a durable, long -life option that requires little to no maintenance in this type of watercourse management scheme.”
Liam Simpson, Civils Site Manager for McGowan adds, “Constructing such a covered watercourse utilising precast concrete box sections is a simple, fast and effective method. Everything ran very smoothly with the culverts being delivered and installed over two days.”
