Mick George discuss St. Georges Retail Park in Leicester, and their involvement in the demolition as part of a development to introduce three new units.

The popular St. Georges Retail Park on the outskirts of Leicester City Centre is currently undergoing construction works to enable the installation of three new units, extending the site to 189,095sq. ft and 14 separate retailers.

Planning permission for the scheme was initially granted back in 2015, with the project originally scheduled for opening in Autumn 2017, but after some delays, the development is now underway.

Step in Mick George Ltd

Local business Mick George Ltd on behalf of Stainforth Construction Ltd has completed Demolition of Unit 10, the former KFC restaurant that was closed late last year, enabling Earthworks to be conducted by the Company for the new buildings.

Clothing and home-furnishing brands, Wren Living, Tapi and Laura Ashley respectively, complete the list of new tenants that will occupy the 24,450 sq.ft of new space being created.

The works aforementioned are just part of the wider £7.5m Parks’ evolution plans to form a “high impact” entrance to the shopping centre.

Recent refurbishments at St. Georges Retail Park

Five units have already seen major refurbishments, and a further planning application has also been submitted with Leicester City Council requesting permission to build two more small buildings, or “pods”, that are expected to be fulfilled by Costa Coffee and KFC.

Jonathan Beck, agent for the owners, said: “The proposed development will fulfil an economic role making better use of an existing retail park within the city centre. The two pods will create an estimated 24 jobs, with significantly more employment opportunities being offered..”

Michael George, Contracts Director at Mick George Ltd commented: ‘’Given that we have two sites in the Leicestershire region now, we are more familiar with the local amenities and are aware of the importance of locations such as St. Georges Retail Park on the local community.’’

George continued: ‘’This knowledge, alongside our expertise in the related fields of Demolition and Earthworks respectively, will stand us in good-stead delivering the project to the highest of standards in a complex, live-working environment.’’
