The Cheshire West and Chester Council has received grant funding of £14.68 million to produce 700 new affordable homes across the borough

The Accelerated Construction grant from Homes England is set to kickstart building work across six different housing sites in Ellesmere Port, Chester and Winsford to produce more affordable homes.

The six sites include:

  • the former Acorns Primary School and Rivacre business centre in Ellesmere Port
  • the former Handley Hill School in Winsford
  • Wharton Green in Winsford, which is identified in the Winsford Neighbourhood Plan for residential development
  • a small site in Lache, Chester
  • land to the rear of Verdin Exchange in Winsford in Winsford, also identified in Winsford Neighbourhood Plan for residential development.

Already the Council has delivered over 900 new homes and the additional funding will support the construction of a further 700 new homes to meet the rising demand for more housing in the area.

Thirty per cent of the new builds will be affordable homes. The remaining homes will be built for sale, affordable rent, shared ownership and privately rented properties.

Cabinet Member for Housing, Cllr Angela Claydon has said that the Council has “recognised the importance of affordable housing” and hopes the funding will the final push needed to deliver these much needed homes.

To deliver the builds, the Council will work in collaboration and partnership with well-trusted developers and Housing Associations.
