Sanctuary has been granted planning permission to build 118 affordable homes in Aberdeen, Scotland

Sanctuary Homes will build 72 flats and 46 houses for social rent on the site of the former fire station in North Anderson Drive.

The £15m affordable homes development includes three wheelchair-accessible flats and an assisted living block, complete with warden flat. Construction is due to start in November with the project completed by March 2021. Sanctuary Scotland will manage the properties.

Lindsay Forrest, Sanctuary’s head of development for Scotland, said: “We’re delighted to get permission to proceed with our redevelopment of the former fire station site.

“The 118 high quality homes being built for social rent include much-needed new flats for people with particular needs.

“We look forward to working with Aberdeen City Council and the Scottish Government to further improve the city’s affordable housing stock.”

Under the proposal, hard and soft landscaped areas will be provided, including grassed areas of open space and a “community green”.

Councillors also approved the latest tranche of 216 homes on land to the south of Hazledene Road as part of the Pinewood Hazledene estate.

What is affordable housing?

Affordable housing is considered and deemed affordable to those with a median household income as rated by the national government or a local government by a recognised housing affordability index.

It should address the housing needs of the lower or middle-income households. Affordable housing becomes a key issue in developing nations where a majority of the population isn’t able to buy houses at the market price.

In a bid to combat the housing crisis and to assist first time buyers in their home purchase, the government has taken various steps to support the construction industry in building more affordable and better quality homes.
