NHBC is the UK’s leading independent provider of warranty and insurance for new homes, covering 70-80% of the new homes built in the UK each year. It is also the largest Approved Inspector for Building Control in England and Wales

NHBC’s registered customers include housebuilders and developers, affordable housing providers, build to rent operators and investors, local authorities and retirement living providers.

Building confidence in construction quality

The core purpose is to build confidence in the construction quality of new homes for the benefit of homeowners. Its approach to technical risk management is aimed at early defects prevention and takes a partnership approach to working with customers from the earliest stages of land acquisition through design, construction and ultimately handover.

NHBC augments its key stage inspection service with additional Construction Quality Reviews, which are an in-depth consultation into quality issues on individual housebuilding sites.

Warranty and insurance

Buildmark is an industry-leading warranty and insurance product for new homes. It includes deposit protection, a two-year builder warranty period during which NHBC offers a dispute resolution service, and a further eight years’ insurance cover against damage caused by defects to the structure of the home.

Innovative construction

With the need to increase the volume of new homes’ supply and the simultaneous challenges around materials and skills, we are at a critical stage in the development of modern methods of construction (MMC). NHBC Accepts is its comprehensive review service for innovative products and systems. It is the fast-track route for acceptance of these products and systems for use in homes covered by our warranty and insurance.

Training

Training the industry’s existing and future workforce is increasingly important. Knowledge Explorer is the training needs analysis tool to help customers identify the knowledge and skills gaps within their business.

NHBC offers a wide range of technical training courses (both online and face to face) as well as NVQ and apprenticeship programmes.

Research

The NHBC Foundation commissions in-depth research and practical guidance to support the sector on significant issues such as climate change, zero-carbon homes, modern methods of construction and biodiversity.
