Cementaid Everdure CALTITE System Hydrophobic and Pore‐blocking Ingredient (HPI) for membrane‐free, truly waterproof concrete
The Caltite waterproof and corrosion-resistant concrete system is a time-proven, practical system that produces damp-proof, highly durable concrete even in saltwater environments. At Ocean Park Shark Aquarium, Hong Kong, which opened in 1989, Caltite was used to waterproof and provide corrosion resistance in the pools and tanks.
With a successful track record of over 60 years, Caltite has been helping designers, developers and owners waterproof and protect concrete structures, even under the most aggressive conditions.
The Dubai Aquarium is part of the $8bn Dubai Mall Complex in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The 10m litre aquarium tank is the largest suspended aquarium in the world. The saltwater aquarium is a fitting complement to the world’s largest shopping mall, which is part of the prestigious Burj Dubai District. Opened in 2009, the aquarium is home to the world’s largest indoor marine mammal pavilion.
Providing permanent waterproofing and durability
Developers Emaar (Dubai) and consultants Meinhardt (Singapore) selected Cementaid Everdure Caltite System Hydrophobic Pore-blocking Ingredient (HPI) to provide permanent waterproofing and design-life durability of the reinforced concrete used in the base slab and tunnel walkways of the enormous aquarium structure.
Batched and supplied under stringent quality controls by ready-mix concrete supplier CEMEX, approximately 6,500m3 of low-shrinkage, high strength (50MPa) Caltite concrete was placed over a period of approximately 12 months.
The aquarium forms a central feature in the mall’s Waterworld, which includes fountains and water features, also using Caltite System concrete.
The last phase of the $4.93bn Resorts World Sentosa was a marine life discovery centre. Caltite was used in about 120,000m3 of concrete in all the water retaining structures. Among the various tanks, there is a huge Oceanarium, which is the centrepiece of the attraction and is claimed to be the largest in the world. Its capacity is 20m gallons or 91,000m3 of seawater going down to a depth of 12m.
