New BIM software developed by the CIBSE and NG Bailey has won BIM Initiative of the Year at the Heating & Ventilation News Awards

The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and NG Bailey have been granted the BIM Initiative of the Year award for their work on a newly released BIM tool.

BIMHawk is a freely-accessible web-based system. It is also a software plug-in that digitises and manages the creation of standard parameters for BIM objects.

BIMHawk improves efficiency

Design and BIM Manager at NG Bailey Paul Marsland developed the software, which enables users to create or upload Product Data Templates (PDTs) that can be directly imported into BIM platforms.

The plug-in allows clients to acquire structured data in a predicable format. This can be used throughout a project by design and delivery teams, removing the need to create new models for each element.

Furthermore, BIMHawk can also be used to compare products on a like-for-like basis. This speeds up the process of specifying, saving the client money.

The award recognised the tool’s ability to prevent duplication and improve productivity as a result.

CIBSE’s Digital Engineering Consultant Carl Collins said: “CIBSE are delighted that our collaborative work with NG Bailey on the BIMHawk project for PDTs has recently been awarded the H&V News’ coveted BIM Initiative of the Year.

“It is the fruit of many years and many peoples’ hard work and to be able to offer this free to all is a great satisfaction in itself. To have received this award really is the icing on the (BIM) cake.”

Standardising BIM object information

Steve Campbell, Technical Director at NG Bailey, added: “Standardising BIM object information is a relatively ‘unexciting’ aspect of BIM but it is crucial if the productivity gains targeted in BIM Level 2 and beyond are ever going to be met.

“I’m so proud of the work that Paul has put into the development of BIMHawk. He saw an industry-wide issue that wasn’t necessarily being addressed and has used his own initiative and knowhow to create a solution that is freely accessible to the industry.”
