Property consultancy firm McBains Cooper has become the latest organisation to gain BIM Level 2 certification.

McBains Cooper gained the approval from BRE Global, which means the firm now meets the criteria for public sector project compliance.

BRE Global assess businesses to ensure they are able to meet PAS 1192-2:2013 standards and the PAS 91 Construction Pre-qualification questionnaire through their BIM policies. The scheme is designed to help BIM certified businesses demonstrate compliance without having to constantly provide evidence during tender processes.

The process of meeting compliance includes an online application, as well as a desktop assessment and onsite audit.

McBains Cooper’s chief executive Michael Thirkettle said: “This is a tremendous achievement and a really significant first for us and British construction as a whole.  Only around 20 other companies have now received the certification across the whole UK construction industry.

“This means we regard ourselves as the only interdisciplinary company providing design and cost/ project management and building surveying services in the country, with BIM Level 2 Certification in this vital area of information management under the PAS 1192 standard.

“The Level 2 certification on the way in which we manage information on the capital and delivery phases of projects, means that we can utilise the performance benefits this brings across all of our disciplines.

“Other companies in this, as yet small, elite of Level 2 certification may have a design focus with architectural, engineering and master planning divisions, but they don’t specialise in project management. Having Project Managers and Quantity Surveyor’s in-house give us the advantage of supplying a more collaborative ‘interdisciplinary’ way of working, with both clients and contractors.

“At McBains Cooper, we have embraced the opportunity for accurate, accessible and consistent digital information sharing that BIM brings to workflows and as such have been using it for several years. As the UK government now requires all centrally procured government contracts to be Level 2 compliant, both clients and our lead suppliers and associated task teams now know we are certified for the delivery of projects using BIM.”
