Ahead of planning for 2021 training and higher education courses for building information modelling (BIM), the new UK BIM Framework Learning Outcomes Edition 1 provides a free resource aligned with current standards. Responding to the needs of industry, the UK BIM Framework has released the UK BIM Framework Learning Outcomes Edition 1 – a free resource to support the development of training content for BIM aligned with current standards.
This latest publication represents an important step forward in the digital management of information for the whole life of a more integrated built environment, supporting industry needs to embrace the ISO 19650 series of standards and helping those transitioning from the original BS/PAS1192 series. It is also a useful resource for those seeking training to evaluate if a course is aligned with the UK BIM Framework and the ISO 19650 series of standards.
Based upon the BIM Academic Forum’s Learning Outcomes Framework (2012), this entirely refreshed schedule, updated for the BS EN ISO 19650 series, is the result of a collaboration between academics, UK construction industry education professionals and the UK BIM Framework member organisations, the British Standards Institute (BSI), the Centre for Digital Built Britain (CDBB), and the UK BIM Alliance (UKBIMA).
Adopting information management
CDBB is committed to working with BSI and the UK BIM Alliance to support the growth of BIM capability aligned to standards. This will be achieved by showing why and how to adopt information management and ensuring consistency of training around information management and BIM. This, in turn, will catalyse the built environment as it digitally transforms.
The new learning outcomes resource – which joins the range of tools and guidance documents developed to support British standards as part of the UK BIM Framework – includes clear explanation presented over five sections that sets out: why information management using BIM is required and its strategic context in the UK; the implications and value of information management using BIM for organisations; how information requirements are identified and communicated; how information is shared between organisations; and understanding the legal and security implications of the UK BIM Framework and its interfaces with other important processes such as health and safety management.
Many educators and practitioners supported the development of the UK BIM Framework Learning Outcomes and CDBB is grateful for this significant input that is helping to support the growth of BIM capability in the UK.

The UK BIM Framework Learning Outcomes is aligned with buildingSMART UK Chapter’s Professional Certification (PCERT)1, to be published later in 2020, and the next edition will consider any modifications necessary to provide Learning Outcomes for BS EN ISO 19650-3, once it has been published.
