New research reports from the RICS have shown the potential of BIM in the built environment
Three new research reports from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) have revealed the vital role of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in the built environment.
BIM, which has grown significantly over the last few years, has become a major component of many building projects. It was originally developed by the architecture, engineering, and construction sectors, but the reports found it has become a facet of many other fields.
The new reports shared experiences from different stages of the real estate life-cycle. RICS looked at the various aspects of how and where BIM technologies had been utilised to improve project coordination.
The first report, the ‘Utilization of BIM in Construction Cost and Project Management Practice: North America, China & the UK’, examined the factors that shaped the development of BIM in the three regions mentioned.
The second report, ‘Building Information Modelling and the Value Dimensions’, investigated the potential for property professional to use BIM data. A global survey as well as workshops were held to help identify the data types and needs of this group.
The third report, ‘Collaborative Building Information Modelling (BIM): Insights from Behavioural Economics and Incentive Theory’, discussed the findings from a research project on the potential and the challenges of collaboration on construction projects as well as how BIM can improve information flows.
As BIM continues to become an integral part of many projects, RICS said there is a need for international standards to be developed. RICS said it is working in a coalition of global organisations to create international standards that will “harmonise cost, classification and measurement definitions in the constructions sector”.
