A new BIM library for offsite construction has been developed by Stewart Milne Timber Systems to aid clients, designers and construction professionals

Professionals in the construction industry can now access a new BIM library for offsite construction. Developed by Stewart Milne Timber Systems, the project spanned 12-months and had the support of the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).

The BIM library includes products such as walls, floors, and roofs. With some 102 Stewart Milne Timber Systems’ products available free it is undoubtedly a great resource for those working in the offsite construction industry.

Improving the design process

Stewart Dalgarno, director of product development at Stewart Milne Group, said: “Part of the challenge of bringing BIM into mainstream construction practice is a lack of available products or systems in an accessible, useable format for clients, designers and construction professional to use.

“Our research highlighted, that less than 5 per cent of the supply chain are BIM ready, with 40 per cent BIM aware but not active, with the rest not even aware of BIM. There was no dedicated Offsite Timber Frame Systems library and only a handful of Offsite Manufacturers, offering some form of BIM component library.

“We’ve worked closely with the BIM Store, the UK’s leading BIM content and hosting creators, to develop this library and it will help designers and architects build 3D models in Autodesk Revit, in a fast and accurate manner, helping them reduce their effort and improve accuracy, from concept to detailed design.”

The timber BIM library, the first of its kind in the UK, will enable architects and designers to download specific products or the entire library. It will reduce the amount of time it takes to complete a timber frame project by as much as a month. Furthermore, it will also reduce the amount of errors.

Design teams will be able to create accurate 3D models to produce timber frame models that can be exported into the original model using an IFC file.
