In response to this and the explosion of data available across the built environment generated from Building information modelling (BIM), geographical information systems (GIS), drones, augmented and virtual reality, artificial intelligence, machine learning and the internet of things, the AEC sector is embarking on a digital transformation of its processes and projects.
BIM is particularly focusing people’s minds as it involves ever-growing volumes of information exchange, especially as it no longer just focuses on working in 3D, but are adding time (4D) and cost (5D) dimensions to the equation. While digitisation is enabling new and better ways of working, it also introduces potential vulnerabilities, so we need to guard against any loopholes being exploited.
Much of the data used for design and construction will be used during the operational life of the building – often for many decades. With this in mind, particularly for sensitive projects, security has to be considered from the earliest stages.
Naturally, there has been growing concerns about cyber-security, data management and related issues especially in relation to cloud-based platforms, and in response legislators and regulators are upgrading the requirements they place upon technology providers and data processors. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which took effect in May 2018, is just one example of the shifts that are taking place.
