Modular Advantage: Sustainability in Modular Construction
Around the industry
International Code Council and Modular Building Institute publish new standards for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing system elements used in off-site construction.
This comprehensive standard will be part of the 1200 series portfolio of standards to address the challenges faced by the off-site construction industry.
Washington, D.C. – The International Code Council, in partnership with the Modular Building Institute (MBI), has published ICC/MBI 1210-2023, Standard for Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing Systems, Energy Efficiency, and Water Conservation in Off-site Construction.
This American National Standard is now part of ICC/MBI’s existing series of off-site construction standards, including ICC/MBI 1200-2021 and ICC/MBI 1205-2021.
Stop accepting non value added building materials in modular supply chains
Building materials manufacturers and lumber mills have traditionally relied heavily on outside sales representatives and distributors to sell their products, and for many years this made sense.
Having a few large customers with steady demand allowed them to focus on their key competency – manufacturing.
Technology and logistics infrastructure did not support a large volume of smaller orders to thousands of customers.
Building green, living clean
How modular construction paves the way for zero-waste and eco-efficiency.
According to a report by Waste & Resources Action Program (WRAP), modular construction can reduce waste materials like timber, cardboard, plastics, and concrete by up to 90% compared to traditional construction methods.
Sustainability: making the case for modular construction
According to a March 2022 article by McKinsey & Company, the world will see a once-in-a-lifetime wave of capital spending on physical assets between now and 2027.
This surge of investment— amounting to roughly $130 trillion —will flood into projects to decarbonize and renew critical infrastructure.
Ninety-three percent of CEOs say that sustainability issues are important for the future success of their business, and 54 percent expect sustainability to be embedded within the core business strategies of most companies in the next decade.
