Modular Advantage January/February2025

In this issue of Modular Advantage, we’re shining a light on a specific side of the industry with which I’ve only recently become more familiar: shipping container construction

For decades, shipping containers were just functional. They protected goods, they allowed for efficient storage and transportation, and they could be reused over and over again.

While all of this is still true, the potential of shipping containers as building components has exploded in recent years: housing, hospitality, education, retail, disaster relief…you name it.

As I continue to learn more about the possibilities of containers and about the teams that transform them, I’m reminded about what makes me love this industry so much: it’s the people.

More specifically, it’s the people who come together to solve problems, create resources, and build better, more vibrant communities. Just like containers that together become a shopping center, a food court, a workforce camp, or a school, we as an industry are often so much more than the sum of our parts.

Through containers, our industry can provide unique solutions that just aren’t feasible using more traditional building methods. And, as the need for more diverse building options grows, container-based structures—and the talented people behind them—will only be more in demand.
