Consumers are willing to pay more for healthier homes, according to the findings of a new report.

The ‘Health and wellbeing in homes’ report showed that almost 30 per cent of buyers and renters would pay more to have properties designed with health in mind.

The report, produced by the UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) and was sponsored by AkzoNobel, Forbo and Hoare Lea, included consumer research from Saint-Gobain. It showcases how the property sector can have a positive impact on mental, social, wellbeing, and physical health of home occupiers. It does so by providing recommendations and evidence for the industry.

The report noted designers should consider beyond the physical impact of design; and should consider elements like improving natural lighting to reduce energy consumption and improve health.

UK-GBC’s campaign and policy director John Alker said: “Good health and wellbeing starts at home – from the quality of the air we breathe, or the amount of daylight we enjoy, to our access to neighbourhood amenities.

“This is an issue which impacts everyone, in every community in the country.

“With consumer interest in health and wellbeing showing no sign of diminishing, there is a key opportunity for the housebuilding sector to provide high quality, healthy and sustainable homes, which our evidence demonstrates buyers are starting to value.”

The “Health and Wellbeing in Homes” report is part of a series of reports produced as part of the World GBC’s “Better Places for People” campaign.
