First net-zero energy school designed by SOM in NYC

Architecture firm SOM has designed the first public school in New York City that generates as much energy as it consumes…

Energy efficiency in public buildings is seeing significant growth, as governments try to do their bit for the environment. In the UK, many councils have worked to reduce their carbon footprint by installing solar panels, more efficient heating systems, and LED lighting.

As the push for efficiency continues, more and more architects are designing with carbon reduction in mind. Last month a property that costs just ÂŁ15 a year to run received a national energy award.

Now, US architects have designed a net-zero energy school. Firm SOM designed the primary school, which will be located on Staten Island. The school will span 68,000 sq ft and will be set in 3.5 acres of land.

Among the design principles that will ensure the school maintains its title of net-zero energy will be a large canopy of solar panels that will generate power. This will enable the building to use 50 per cent less energy than other schools across New York City.

Other features will include skylights and reflective ceiling panels. These will reduce the reliance on artificial light, as it will bring natural light into the building.

The building will also utilise heating technology, using the earth’s natural warmth to regulate temperature. Solar hot water units will also be installed.

SOM Design Partner Roger Duffy said: “By pushing for higher environmental performance with our design, we have a remarkable opportunity to define a new standard for energy efficient school buildings in New York City and worldwide.”

The school, the Kathleen Grimm School for Leadership and Sustainability, is named after a former deputy chancellor of New York City public schools.

NYC School Construction Authority President and CEO Lorraine Grillo said: “The late Kathleen Grimm was a dedicated public leader and it is fitting this innovative new school, named in her honour, will lead New York City into achieving Mayor de Blasio’s sustainability goals.”

If successful, the firm hopes this design could be used for other school in the city.
