Cardiff University has been awarded funding to investigate the role of urban greening in boosting sustainability…

Cardiff University’s School of Planning and Geography and the Welsh School of Architecture have won a grant to investigate urban greening. The funding will be used to discover how it can boost water supply, improve flood management, and increase sustainability.

The grant was awarded to the university and its partners from the USA and Indonesia. The consortium forms part of the Global Innovation Initiative. This programme is backed by both the UK and US governments and aims to strengthen research collaboration between universities in the UK, US, and emerging economies.

The project is expected to span two years and will focus on topics such as urban forestry and green building design. It will examine how transferable these are through a series of workshops hosted by the three partners.

Cardiff University senior lecturer Dr Andrea Frank said: “We hope to provide substantial economic, social and environmental gains not only for the US and Europe, but also developing countries around the world.

“To do this, we will need to develop approaches that are sensitive to local culture, knowledge and expertise.”

Another grant was also awarded to the University of Exeter and its partner universities in Florida and China. This consortium will investigate flood impact assessment in mega-cities under climate change.
