Green infrastructure design challenge launched at Ecobuild

The CIBSE and UK Climate Impacts Programme have launched a competition that focuses on green infrastructure design and the challenges this brings

A competition on green infrastructure design will today launch at Ecobuild. The challenge, organised by the Chartered Institution of Building Service Engineers (CIBSE) and the UK Climate Impacts Programme (UKCIP), is in its second year.

The competition invites teams to demonstrate creative designs. These should utilise both indoor and outdoor green infrastructure to enhance environments, such living walls and indoor planting. It aims to change the way in which built professionals think about green infrastructure and encourage uptake in the design process.

Challenging ideas

Sara Kassam, Head of Sustainability Development at CIBSE, said: “We want to challenge the idea that green infrastructure lives outdoors, and that it can’t contribute to building services such as ventilation or internal comfort.

“We need imaginative solutions to integrate green infrastructure into existing and new buildings, and this competition will show us what’s out there.

“As our climate changes, what constitutes ‘good’ building performance changes with it, and it’s imperative we come up with new solutions.

“Entries need to contain both an overarching green infrastructure vision for the office building, and detailed design provided for a selected floor of the office, to truly demonstrate the effectiveness of its application.”

Who can enter?

Individuals and teams are welcome to enter the competition, and should submit their entry via 2 x A0 posters. It is open to all, no matter what level, meaning anyone from students to qualified practitioners can be involved.

The competition will launch at Ecobuild, which opens today. CIBSE is involved with the event as a Building Performance Strategic Partner for 2017 and will showcase energy and building performance content during the three days.
