StormMeister® Flood Protection products: Development and testing

StormMeister® Flood Protection products were created in 2010 when director, Malcom Snape, was working in the tropical rainforests of West Africa – it is here that he came up with the idea of utilising the hydrodynamic power of floodwater to create a flood seal

Since then, StormMeister® has been dedicated to designing and producing of not only flood doors, but a wide range of commercial and residential flood protection solutions. Twelve years after it’s conception, StormMeister® has moved into a larger premises with custom-built testing facilities to ensure quality of items and for continuing improvement and development of products.

At our purpose-built research and development facility, we continually test for performance, ease of use, installer friendliness, and overall reliability.

Along with producing new flood protection products, we regularly test current products to ensure continuous quality and performance. All water used during testing is recovered to storage tanks and used over and over in compliance with the StormMeister® Environmental Policy.

StormMeister® understands the devastating effects a flood can have a person’s home and/or business and we will always endeavour to provide our customers with the highest quality of service and products available – minimising the risk of any future floodwater damage. To do this, we continually add to our range of flood protection products. 

StormMeister® Flood Doors BS EN 12217 compliance

All StormMeister® products are tested for flood resistance AND we also test our flood doors for handle force. External doors, of any type, need to be user-friendly and easy to operate in compliance with BS EN 12217. StormMeister® flood doors are the ONLY mechanically operated flood doors compliant with BS EN 12217, making them easy to operate and also suitable as fire exit doors. Non-compliant doors of any type, including flood doors, are not suitable as fire exit doors and therefore alternative means of fire escape must be available.

A 4.2m-wide tank has been provided at our testing facility to allow us to test larger products, such as our Heavy-Duty Industrial Flood Gates and Barriers. These products can be combined with our zero-threshold baseplate at commercial properties to allow vehicles to drive through with ease, while also ensuring the ability to provide effective flood protection.

We have also built extra-tall testing tanks which allow us to test products up to a height of 2.1m. We have already tested our StormMeister® Rapid Assembly Flood Barrier to 1.8m height of water, double the industry standard for flood protection products. We have had great success in testing our barriers at this height and found them to require no additional compression to resist the extreme pressures of that level of floodwater.

StormMeister® has tested our inward opening uPVC flood door to 900mm of simulated floodwater (a video of this can seen on our YouTube page, outperforming all others on the market. Our flood doors are flood sealed all the way around the door and will protect at higher levels though subject to the structural integrity of the property.

What does the future hold for StormMeister®?

StormMeister® will be continuing working with the Flood Innovation Centre at the University of Hull, which supports small and medium-sized businesses to develop new products and services to help with flood resilience, to discuss and implement ways to further research, grow and improve our product line.

Examples of StormMeister® products can be seen across the UK and abroad, in places such as Spain, France and America. We continue to grow and develop to ensure our customers, wherever they may be, can have peace of mind that their property and/or business will be protected from flooding.

The StormMeister® testing facility is also available to other companies to test their products in our tanks, we will work with others in the industry in the common aim of providing excellence in flood protection products.
