An 18-year-old construction worker has been critically injured after being struck by a vehicle while working on the M8 roadworks, prompting an investigation
An investigation is set to occur into the safety measures in place after a teenage worker was seriously injured on a roadworks site.
The 18-year-old was struck by a vehicle on 22 November. He was working at the M8 roadworks near to Carnbroe Road, Bellshill. He was taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary where he is being cared for at the intensive care unit.
Health and Safety Executive to investigate
The incident, which is being treated as an industrial accident, is under investigation by the Health and Safety Executive.
A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “Around 1100 hours on Tuesday 22nd November, police attended a report of an 18-year old man having sustained serious injuries whilst working at the M8 road works near to Carnbroe Road, Bellshill.
“Emergency services responded and the man was taken by ambulance to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
“The injured man is still within the intensive care unit after receiving treatment for serious injuries. His condition is critical but stable.
“The incident is being treated as an industrial accident and as such a full investigation will be undertaken by Health and Safety Executive.”
A Transport Scotland spokesman said: “The contractor, Scottish Roads Partnership, has confirmed that an incident occurred on site yesterday morning at approximately 11:10am, when a road worker was struck by a construction vehicle near the Shawhead Junction.
“Emergency services were in attendance and the injured man was taken to hospital.
“A full investigation into the cause of the incident is now underway.”
