EDF confirmed a man in his 40s died at the Hinkley Point C site on Sunday 13 November after suffering a ‘crush injury’ from machinery

Emergency services were called to the Hinkley Point C site around 08:30 GMT on Sunday 13 November, but sadly the contractor died of his injuries.

Avon and Somerset Police have informed the next of kin and are liaising with the Health and Safety Executive in an ‘ongoing’ inquiry.

This is the first fatality at the Hinkley Point C site

Due to become operational in June 2027, Hinkley Point C is the first new nuclear power station built in the UK in over two decades and currently hosts around 8,000 workers onsite.

A HSE investigation of the site took place on Sunday and the Office of Nuclear Regulation has now become involved, with an ONR operative commenting:

“Our thoughts are with the deceased’s family, friends and colleagues at this tragic time.

“ONR is on the site and working alongside other relevant authorities.”

Unions GMB and Unite responded to the sad news

It is believed the man was working as a contractor for Bylor. Hinkley Point C Union Convenors and Reps said:

“GMB Union and Unite the Union members at Hinkley Point C are devastated by the tragic loss of one of our own.

“All of our thoughts and condolences are with his loved ones and friends at this tragic time.”

Work has been suspended at the site until further notice

Delivery director at Hinkley Point C Nigel Cann said in a statement on Sunday: “We are very sad to confirm that one of our team was involved in a fatal construction traffic incident this morning during planned work activities.

“The incident is being investigated by the police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and we will co-operate fully with the authorities.

“Work at the site has been stood down and we are offering support to colleagues affected by this tragic event. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this very difficult time.”
