The Institution of Structural Engineers has announced the winners of the 2021 Structural Awards, celebrating the best work across the global structural engineering community

The Institution of Structural Engineers‘ Structural Awards first took place 54 years ago to recognise the work of the global structural engineering community.

This year’s winners were selected from 53 diverse structures and judged by a panel, chaired by former IStructE President Professor Tim Ibell, on their creativity, quality and sustainability, as well as the ingenuity of the engineering team.

13 categories were up for grabs and the highly desired Supreme Award for Structural Engineering Excellence was jointly awarded to Christchurch Town Hall, New Zealand and Lille Langebro, Denmark.

Eco-friendly construction

All of the entries demonstrated how structural engineers around the world are acknowledging emerging issues, such as climate change, in construction.

Many of the shortlisted and winning projects exhibited adapted approaches, designed to deliver the same work with more eco-friendly methods.

Commenting on this year’s programme, Professor Ibell said, “Massive congratulations to all the winners and thanks to all those who entered. What this year’s submissions demonstrated is how there’s been a shift in attitudes towards green building. No doubt we’ll see sustainability become a non-negotiable project requirement, as important as structural integrity, safety and comfort.

“It will also influence the way these awards are judged going forward, becoming an essential part of the application process. It will help demonstrate how our profession is playing a key role in reducing waste and protecting the environment.”
