Rt Hon Greg Clark has been appointed secretary of state for levelling up, housing and communities after the dismissal of Michael Gove

Greg Clark will take on the role of secretary of state for levelling up, housing and communities following the sacking of Michael Gove for ‘disloyalty’ after he told Boris Johnson to step down as prime minister.

In a tweet, Clark wrote: “We have a duty to ensure that the country has a functioning government in the weeks ahead.

Clark previously served as secretary of state for communities and local government

“Having been secretary of state at the communities department before, I will do my best to provide stability, good governance and accountability to Parliament at this important time.”

From July 2011 until September 2012 Greg Clark served as minister for cities. He was also secretary of state for communities and local government from May 2015 until July 2016. He then took up the role of secretary of state for business, energy and industrial strategy from July 2016 to July 2019.

Housing and construction ministers resign

Earlier this week, housing and construction ministers Stuart Andrew and Lee Rowley resigned from their posts. Boris Johnson has since resigned as prime minister.
