The Open Doors campaign which allows the public to enjoy a unique chance to explore behind the scenes of live construction sites has launched today (19 March)
The campaign, which is led by Build UK in partnership with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), aims to inspire young people and career changers to consider and explore a dynamic and exciting career in the construction industry.
Construction is an industry of opportunity. According to the latest Construction Skills Network report 158,000 jobs will be created in the sector from 2018-22. Jobs in demand include carpenters, labourers and white collar managerial roles highlighting the diverse range of opportunities in the industry.
This year’s Open Doors Week will see over 275 construction sites opening up across England, Scotland and Wales to allow the public to see first-hand the incredible work that takes place within the construction industry.
Construction sites opening their doors to the public in England, Scotland and Wales during this week include:
- BRE Group’s Innovation Park
- Willmott Dixon’s Cardiff West Community High
- Kier Group’s Edinburgh College of Art.
Open Doors is also supported by the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS), the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS), Construction News and Go Construct.
Suzannah Nichol MBE, Build UK Chief Executive, said: “Open Doors is a fantastic initiative which allows the public an exclusive, behind the scenes opportunity to see the amazing work taking place in construction, and experience the range of rewarding careers construction offers. 2018 is another record-breaking year for Open Doors and it is set to be a great week!”
Sarah Beale, CITB Chief Executive, said: “CITB’s research shows the construction industry will see huge growth and career opportunities over the next few years. By providing the public with a behind the scenes look at our industry, Open Doors is an excellent way of showcasing the range of rewarding careers construction can offer.
“We encourage people from all backgrounds to book onto an Open Doors site visit this week and take the first step on the road to a successful career in construction.”
The Open Doors campaign will take place from 18-24 March.
