Morgan Sindall Construction has delivered a £4m outpatients unit at St Richard’s Hospital, using a modular building to create additional accommodation on site
Morgan Sindall Construction has delivered a £4m outpatients unit at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester for the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSussex).
Morgan Sindall Construction’s Southern Home Counties business has handed over the two-storey, 400 sq m, centrally located modular building to create additional accommodation on site.
Modern methods of construction (MMC) have been used to minimise the environmental impact, as well as bring the delivery date forward.
The community was consulted to ensure the project delivered social value
To maximise the project’s social value, the Southern Home Counties business communicated with local stakeholders to identify what initiatives could be completed for the benefit of the hospital and surrounding local community. This follows the missive of the Pagabo national Medium Works framework, through which the project was procured.
The outpatient’s unit will provide an additional eight consulting rooms to alleviate the impact of COVID-19 on the hospital’s patient waiting lists.
MMC was used to tailor the project to the Trust’s needs and means
By employing its Intelligent Solutions approach, Morgan Sindall Construction worked closely with the hospital throughout the project and recommended a modular unit to align with the Trust’s financial, environmental and timescale goals.
The 400 sq m modular building has been delivered using off-site modern methods of construction to improve the project’s delivery programme.
The outpatients unit will reduce pressures at St Richard’s Hospital
Guy Hannell, Morgan Sindall Construction’s Southern Home Counties area director, said: “We understand the great strain that UHSussex, like all hospitals across the country, has been under over the last couple of years, and we’re pleased that we’ve been given the opportunity to relieve some of that pressure by providing additional accommodation for St Richards Hospital site.
“The Morgan Sindall Construction Southern Home Counties team are experts in customer collaboration and engaging with key stakeholders, making us well-suited to delivering this project without disrupting the hospital’s vital everyday operations.”
What appears to be a(nother) waste of taxpayers’ money.
It is understood that the builders failed to get the entrance doors in the right place, that consulting rooms that are too small to fit staff, patients and equipment, there is no emergency alarm system to alert staff in event of medical emergency, internal doors that are too heavy to move and are required to be kept closed, failed heating system and so on.
If correct, whoever managed and signed off on this, and which ever NHS management staff helped “design” this supposedly unfit for purpose building should be being asked some searching questions.
