Premier Modular has delivered decant classrooms on top of a modular structure as part of a comprehensive refurbishment at Douay Martyrs Catholic Secondary School in Ickenham

36 decant classrooms were installed on top of a permanent modular structure to provide general teaching facilities, an IT suite, science classrooms with a shared preparation room and SEN spaces, whilst the school undergoes refurbishments.

Limited space on site meant that the best location for the decant classrooms was on top of the new modular extension. A platform lift and internal staircases were installed to provide access.

Premier Modular also constructed a single-storey ancillary building to accommodate school offices – this required temporary foundations and an accessible timber ramp.

School refurbishments include a single-storey modular annex

The wider school refurbishments include a new single-storey modular annex. Premier Modular was awarded the contract to supply temporary accommodation to keep the school operational while the main school building is refurbished.

David Williams, project manager for main contractor Morgan Sindall Construction, said: “This was a challenging project but Premier engaged in the design development and at every stage of the scheme.

“This meant that despite its complexities, the project went very smoothly. A lot of openness and collaboration was required between the two building suppliers, which they managed very well.”

Anthony Corish, executive headteacher at Douay Martyrs Catholic School said: “We were very keen to minimise any interruption to the children’s learning from the redevelopment and following the pandemic, so providing a comprehensive facility for in-person teaching and social interaction were key priorities for the school.

“Premier’s classrooms give us all the facilities we need for the next year, and pupils and staff were able to move in without any disruption to their education.”
