The Bristol Housing Festival has launched an architecture competition, in partnership with Trinity College, to find a partner to design the college’s student accommodation
The architecture competition will find the designer of the first phase of a redevelopment of the college campus. All ideas for Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) that are highly sustainable and meet the needs of the college are welcome.
Aims of the competition
Trinity College is hoping to redevelop the site because of a growing need for new accommodation, as the current building can no longer meet the needs of its residential students.
It is seeking a partner who can understand the vocation of the college and how the building could impact on shaping the future of theological and ministerial training.
Working together with the Bristol Housing Festival, the college hopes to use this opportunity to enhance the experience of its residential students, whilst developing a space which can be used for community growth and additional student communal facilities.
The Bristol Housing Festival is a five-year project with the ambition to test housing innovation in real-life scenarios, helping to find out what works for the people of Bristol by providing real and lasting positive change.
Building innovative and sustainable accommodation
Trinity College site development lead, Malcolm Bourne, said “The architecture competition is a really exciting venture, which will allow us to provide innovative and sustainable accommodation for our students.
“We’re looking to pursue a broader vision for housing and community-building that aligns with the vision of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Commission on Housing, Church and Community and its focus on ‘building better communities and homes, not just houses’.”
Bristol Housing Festival, project director, Jez Sweetland, added: “Trinity College shares our vision of exploring the potential of MMC, as well as our values of community inclusivity and sustainability – it’s fantastic to be working in partnership with them.
“The competition presents a truly enriching opportunity to trial new ideas not only for the college, but for the wider housing sector.”
The deadline for Round 1 design proposals is 9am on 13 March 2020.
