Hampshire Police have arrested two boys on suspicion of arson after a major blaze destroyed a timber frame building under construction

Hampshire Police have arrested an 11-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy on suspicion of arson in connection with a major fire at a construction site in Southampton. It took more than 70 firefighters to control the blaze.

The fire was reported at 2pm on 26 March at a vacant commercial property under construction in St Mary Street.

Hampshire police and Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene.

Due to the severity of the fire nearby homes and businesses were evacuated as a precaution.

There have not been reports of anyone being injured as a result of the fire.

The police previously released an image of three people seen on the roof of the timber frame building prior to the fire starting. These people have since been identified and have been eliminated from the investigation.

The two boys arrested, both from Southampton, remain in police custody at this time.
