Kier has been chosen by Cardiff Council to deliver the £64.3m Fitzalan High School in Cardiff which will provide teaching facilities for 1,500 schoolchildren
Fitzalan High School will deliver state-of-the-art teaching facilities for 1,500 11-16-year-old schoolchildren, plus a sixth form.
Procured through the South East & Mid Wales Collaborative Construction Framework, the school is being jointly funded by Cardiff Council and Welsh Government.
The Fitzalan High School will have two interconnecting buildings, with 88 classrooms, nine science laboratories, an immersive room, drama studio, sports hall and dining area.
The school will also have a 1,800 seat multi-function hall with an atrium and learning spaces to support vocational training, such as construction.
There will be an array of sporting facilities, including a 25m four-lane swimming pool, four multi-use games areas (MUGAs) and grass and 3G/mutli-use sport pitches, which will be available for the local community to use.
The Fitzalan High School will be built to a BREEAM excellent standard and Kier will work with its local supply chain to deliver this scheme.

“This is a significant project for the local community and throughout the construction of this new school, we will look to leave a lasting legacy, by creating job and training opportunities, working with our local supply chain partners and engaging with pupils and showcasing the wide range of job roles currently available within the construction industry.”
Deputy leader of Cardiff Council, and cabinet member for education, employment and skills, councillor Sarah Merry, added: “As the development of the new Fitzalan High School progresses, members of the local community can begin to look forward to the exciting opportunities which this investment will present.
“Announcing the building contract is the latest landmark in delivering a modern, state-of-the-art school which will also provide access to excellent amenities for local people to use, providing a significant boost for the area.”
The Fitzalan High School is scheduled for completion in time for the 2022/23 academic year.
