‘Designing and planning for flood risk’ is a free Flood Risk Seminar for architects and developers, discussing key principles of designing flood
Argyll Environmental, the Brighton-based environmental risk management consultancy, is hosting a free talk on ‘designing and planning for flood risk’, which provides architects and developers guidance on the key principles of designing flood resilience into new or redeveloped properties.
The talk is being delivered on 23rd January at Argyll’s head office in Brighton, alongside guest speaker Ed Barsley. Ed is a renowned specialist in environmental design in architecture, with a particular interest on developing strategies to reduce flood risk and increase resilience.
Ed, who is founder of the award-winning The Environmental Design Studio, will discuss the various types of flooding that can occur and will explain the range of tools and techniques available for understanding flood risk contexts. Strategies for adaptation and resilience will also be discussed at catchment, community and building scale in relation to both new and existing buildings.
Environmental Consultant, Stephanie Kerr, will also discuss the various types of Flood Risk Assessments that are available to architects and developers, in order to assess risk levels at any given location.
Stephanie Kerr: “The importance of designing for flood shouldn’t be underestimated, particularly given recent reports from The Met Office and Environment Agency, whose climate projections are showing an increase in rainfall and sea levels in the future. Incorporating flood risk and resilience into the design process should be considered first and foremost as part of any planning application, particularly early on in the process.
“We are delighted to be hosting the free talk for architects and developers from the region, who wish to find out more about designing and planning for flood risk, so they can explore the techniques for determining flood risk contexts, as well as resistance and resilience strategies. Everyone is welcome to attend and there will be drinks and networking after the event.”
