Galliford Try has won a £29.3m contract to start work on a new teaching and research centre at the Headingley campus at Leeds Beckett University

The £45m Headingley campus project will create a new home for the Carnegie School of Sport. It will include research laboratories, an indoor rooftop sprint track for performance training and analysis and a roof walking track and terrace with an environmental chamber to mimic different altitudes and environments.

Leeds City Council granted planning permission in May, and the building has been designed by architect Sheppard Robson.

Cliff Wheatley, managing director for Galliford Try North East and Yorkshire, said: “We have a proven track record in providing high-quality buildings for higher education and we look forward to working with the university to ensure that their students and staff have the world-class sports science facilities they demand.”

Sheppard Robson partner Alex Solk said: “It has been a fantastic journey working with the university and their School of Sport to design a facility to match their reputation in this field, and enable their future growth and innovation. The challenges of the site and context have driven us to design a striking built form that expresses the use within.”

Professor Peter Slee, Vice-chancellor of Leeds Beckett University, added: “This £45m world-class facility will underline our global reputation for delivering high-impact sports teaching and research.

“It is part of a wider £200m programme of investment across our campuses which will further increase the positive contribution we make to our city region and beyond.”

Construction is due for completion in Autumn 2019.
