DPG Media in collaboration with developer Being, has signed an agreement with Besix to deliver Mediavaert, a new hybrid-timber office situated on the Van der Madeweg in Amsterdam
With over 44,000 m sq, the new building is set to be one of the largest hybrid-timber office buildings in the world.
Mediavaert will promote flexible and healthy working, alongside innovation and creativity.
Team V Architecture – in collaboration with Arup, DGMR and DELVA Landscape Architecture & Urbanism – is at the forefront of innovative wood construction and the green landscape of the office.
Mediavaert will be the first hybrid-timber office of its size in Europe.
Compared to traditional construction methods, the production of wood produces considerably less CO2 and nitrogen. Trees absorb CO2 during their growth, which remains stored in the material, meaning that Mediavaert’s timber construction limits additional emissions and has a potentially positive carbon balance.
The hybrid-timber office is very energy efficient (including underground heat/cold storage with a heat pump and solar panels on the roof) and receives a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ certification.
‘An optimal working climate and a positive ecological impact’
Nic De Roeck, managing director Besix Netherlands, said: “We are very proud to be engineering and building the new and largest wood-hybrid office in Europe for DPG Media.
“For us, this is a confirmation of DPG Media’s trust in Besix, in particular that we are building a head office for them for the second time: first in Antwerp and now in Amsterdam.
“The building design is strongly committed to a sustainable and healthy working environment. Most of the construction is carried out in wood.
“As an innovative builder and remodeller, we want to further expand the sustainable character of innovative urban development with this project.”
“The fact that we are now also going to build our Dutch headquarters ‘Mediavaert’ in Amsterdam with Besix, after realising our office on the Mediaplein in Antwerp, is a match that we are very happy with.
“With the unique wooden design, the ample daylight and the special roof gardens, we ensure both an optimal working climate and a positive ecological impact in a CO2-saving way.
“We are very much looking forward to establishing the media hub of the Netherlands here with DPG Media and to have editors, studios, a printing company and other business units of the Amsterdam region together,” commented Erik Roddenhof, CEO DPG Media Group and DPG Media Nederland.
In addition to workspaces, the building contains test labs, radio recording studios for Qmusic, meeting rooms, restaurants, an espresso bar and an event location on the quay of the Duivendrechtsevaart.
Green spaces in, on and around the hybrid-timber office create a working environment that promotes and inspires wellbeing and health.
At the moment Gebr. De Koning will carry out piling work, after which Besix will start the structural works at the end of 2021. The delivery will take place in early 2024.
