Mick George Ltd will be completing enabling works on a new multi-million-pound Katherine Warington School in Harpenden
Having been appointed by the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA), principal contractor Kier are leading on the design and build of the new Katherine Warington School, located on the corner of Common Lane and Lower Luton Road.
The contractor is working in conjunction with ESFA, Harpenden Secondary Education Trust, and Hertfordshire County Council to deliver this multi-million-pound project. Scheduled for completion in September 2019, the school will cater for 1150 pupils.
The Katherine Warington School
Harpenden Secondary Education Trust was the initiating body’ for the project and is made up of the Governors from the three existing schools in the area, after declaring that it wasn’t feasible or desirable for the current schools to expand any further to accommodate the increased demand experienced during the last decade.
Following a ‘comprehensive site search’ in 2014 the chosen ‘green-belt’ destination was eventually approved, and Hertfordshire County Council agreed to purchase the 42 acres (17 hectares) of farmland needed for the new school buildings, accompanying sports fields and other facilities.
Kier have incorporated a whole host of sophisticated environmental elements within the build to significantly improve energy consumption, not least through optimising the natural light attained by the building, LED lighting, roof-mounted photovoltaic solar panels, natural ventilation and thermal fabric insulation.
It is envisaged that Katherine Warington School will not only deliver an academic education of the highest standard but an environment in which children can acquire the skills ready for a happy and productive life.
What’s in a name?
The schools name was selected by the Trust’ after the scientist who lived in Harpenden for 90 years and pioneered research into the beneficial impact of boron and boric acid on plant and bean fertility during her working life at Rothamsted Research.
