Cityfibre

Kier has been appointed by CityFibre to deliver full-fibre rollouts across five towns and cities in central and south-west England

This work is part of CityFibre’s £4bn Gigabit City Investment Programme which is targeting up to 8 million premises to upgrade to full-fibre and supports the government’s own full-fibre ambitions of delivering superfast broadband speeds across the country by 2025.

The combined worth of the five contracts, covering Cheltenham, Gloucester, Bath, Weston-Super-Mare and Worcester, is up to £82m and works will start from early 2021 and will run for two and a half years.

To support this programme of works, Kier will be creating c.300 employment, apprenticeship and training opportunities across all of these locations, as well as upskilling teams to deliver this vital digital infrastructure.

Transforming the digital infrastructure of cities

Barry McNicholas, group managing director at Kier Utilities & Rail, said: “We are delighted to have been appointed by CityFibre to construct full-fibre networks in key locations across England and support its wider plans of transforming the digital infrastructure of cities and towns across the UK.

“The need for reliable and fast broadband speeds has never been greater and our expertise and skills within the telecoms sector means we are ideally placed to support CityFibre’s ambitious plans which will allow more consumers to benefit from a full-fibre experience.”
