Kier has been appointed to deliver a £13.9m full internal fit-out at Barnsley blood centre in Capitol Park, Dodworth by NHS and Blood Transplant
The works have been procured under the Department of Health & Social Care’s ProCure 22 (P22) Framework. The Barnsley blood centre will be 6,750m² with three labs on the ground floor and an additional lab, open plan office space, meeting rooms and catering facilities housed on the first floor. The centre will also house environmentally controlled laboratories to be used to research advanced cell therapies.
The facility is due for completion in the second quarter of 2020 and once opened will become one of the most advanced cell research centres in the world.
John O’Callaghan, managing director for Kier Regional Buildings Northern, commented: “I am pleased we have been appointed to deliver phase 2 of this state-of-the-art facility. It is a crucial development for the people of the North of England and hospitals in the region.
“Throughout our works, Kier will be providing a number of employment opportunities to local people. We will have apprentices on-site and work experience opportunities, as well as engaging with local schools through educational activities.”
John Hutchinson, NHSBT project manager, said: “Happy with site both progress and Health and Safety standards to date being exemplary and looking forward to the project completion in the second quarter of 2020.”
