Kier has completed the new fire station in Brixham for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, which provides dedicated modern facilities for the fire service
The new building meets the operational needs of the firefighters while balancing quality of design. Facilities provide all the usual operational needs of the fire service plus there are meeting rooms, a gym, shower rooms, car chargers and kitchen facilities.
Kier worked with its local and specialist supply chain partners, of which 83% were from a 30 mile radius of Brixham to deliver the project.
Procured as part of the Southern Construction Framework, the building utilises energy efficient systems includes air source heat pumps and solar PV, combined with high levels of insulation ensuring the building reduces long term running costs.
The £1.7m project, which involved the demolition of the existing fire station and the building of a new fire station, was delivered from Spring 2020 and completed in May 2021 throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, following all Government guidance and working to Covid-19 specific Site Operating Procedures.
The SCF procurement approach
Doug Lloyd, operations director for Kier Regional Building Western & Wales, said: “This has been a fantastic project for us to be involved and we’re proud to have supported the local community in delivering these important, modern and sustainable facilities for the fire service.
“This project, at the heart of the community, demonstrates our capability and the Southern Construction Framework’s ability to procure and deliver projects across a number of sectors and values.”
Kingsley Clarke, operations lead for Southern Construction Framework, said: “Successful project outcomes are at the heart of the SCF procurement approach.
“It is really pleasing to see that Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service and Kier have worked so well on this scheme to deliver a modern and sustainable Fire Station in Brixham for the benefit of both the fire service and local community.”
Sean Burnell, station commander, added: “It is great to see the building of the new Brixham Fire Station complete.
“Since August 2019 the crew have been re-located to the other side of town, so they are very excited to be moving back to a new, purpose-built, modern facility.”
