A decision on whether to approve or reject a planning application to build more than 500 homes in Newcastle upon Tyne is set to be made
A planning application for 529 new homes is set to be decided in the coming days. The plans would see the properties built on land near Newcastle’s Kingston Park stadium.
New jobs will be created
The £62m project, if approved, would create some 120 jobs during the construction phase.
Four phase project
Developer Taylor Wimpey UK earmarked the site to the north-west of Brunton Road and south of Ponteland Road for development. The homes would be built in four phases, with the first phase seeing 90 homes built on land east of the Newcastle Falcons’ rugby ground. This phase forms the detailed element of the application. The remaining phases form part of the outline element of the scheme.
Taylor Wimpey UK said it expected the construction phase would see an economic price tag of £62.3m, with additional new homes bonus payments totalling £4.2m. Furthermore the scheme would see more council tax revenue generated for the local authority.
A report to councillors stated: “It is also accepted that the proposed development will bring additional economic benefits for existing local services and facilities with increased spending from residents and higher footfall.”
The application, which has been recommended for approval, has also been subjected to some objections relating to the increase in traffic the development would cause around the Kingston Park area.
The proposal will be decided on 2 December 2016 when it goes before Newcastle City Council.
