An iconic listed building in Dundee is set to undergo transformation after plans were submitted for a new mixed use project.

The DP&L building, located on Dundee’s East Dock Street, will be turned into a mixed use scheme if approval is granted. The building has a long history and was originally constructed for the Dundee and Arbroath railway in 1891.

Architect Morgan McDonnell submitted the plans, which will see the ground floor regenerated into office, with 10 flats built above.

Part of the plans will see the internal central chimney demolished by Edinburgh-based developers Stone Acre. The fourth floor collar beams will also be raised to provide ample head room.

Plans will also see an extension attached to the rear of the building demolished. This will change the footprint of the building back to the original plans. The firm said great care will be taken to ensure the initial design of the original listed building is maintained.

According to a spokesperson for Morgan McDonnell, the redevelopment of the building feeds into the wider investment and regeneration of Dundee’s waterfront.

The spokesman said: “The proposals aim to bring clarity back to an important piece of Dundee’s industrial heritage.

“As the building has been occupied by DP&L and its subsidiaries since 1915, this is a significant moment in the building’s life, presenting an exciting opportunity for rejuvenation.”

If approval is given, the firm hopes work will complete by early 2016.
