The groundbreaking retractable pitch at Tottenham Hotspur’s New White Hart Lane stadium was successfully tested in May, in what the club described as a “massive milestone” for the multi-million pound project
Designed, engineered, built and installed by Sheffield-based engineering firm SCX, the pitch will be made up of three sections that will slide out from underneath the South Stand in approximately 25 minutes to create a seamless grass playing surface.
The retractable pitch will sit above an artificial surface that can be used for NFL games, concerts and other events.
The test in May saw the west and central sections moved into place, joined together and returned to the South Stand.
In addition, 480-tonne hydraulic sides were also tested. The sides lift once the pitch sections have connected to ensure the touchlines are the same level as the playing surface.
This was the first time that all the elements of the retractable pitch had been tested in one place in the new stadium.
